The aim of this paper is to present and discuss the theoretical basis of a didactic material designed to teach Brazilian songs to students of Portuguese as an Additional Language (PAL) at the Portuguese as an Additional Language Center, at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (PPE-UFRGS). Based on the assumption that songs are composed of lyrics and music, it is understood that the teaching of songs should develop literomusical literacy, that is, promote the expansion of the repertoire and, through commented listening, provide an understanding of possible meaning effects of both verbal and musical languages, considering the social practices where the songs occur, in other words, their production, circulation and reception contexts (COELHO DE SOUZA, 2014). The lesson plans were designed based on cultural-artistic movements (Protest Songs, Tropicália, Manguebeat, MPB, Non Mainstream Songs and Feminist Songs), seeking to contemplate, on the one hand, songs of different musical genres with common themes and, on the other hand, the mixing of genres, one of the characteristics of the contemporary music scene (SOARES; VICENTE, 2017). Songs that deal with the proposed movements and texts that could contribute to an artistic-cultural contextualization of the works were selected. The tasks elaborated cover listening, reading, speaking and writing. Through this proposal, it is expected to expose students to a diverse repertoire of Brazilian songs that circulate in different cultural environments of the country, creating opportunities for understanding and discussion of contemporary Brazilian culture. This study aims to contribute to Portuguese as an Additional Language teaching and to the research in the field of teaching language through songs. ...
