| pt_BR |
dc.description.abstract | Health information seeking has the potential to create better-informed patients who are more engaged in caring for their health, hence directly affecting the doctor–patient relationship. Nevertheless, there have been concerns regarding the dissemination of inaccurate or incomplete information which may lead to non- evidence-based practices or treatments. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze the websites returned by Google and Bing on periodontal disease by the JAMA criteria and the HONCode, as well as by their typology, to identify patterns and potential weaknesses in the trustworthiness indicators. The term “gum disease” was searched in Google.com.br and in Bing.com.br. The first 200 websites were analyzed by the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) criteria and the Health On the Net Foundation (HONCode) certification, instruments for assessing quality of health information. The content of the websites was analyzed according to a content-evaluation instrument on periodontal diseases modified of Irwin et al. (2011). The JAMA score in different groups of websites was compared using the Kruskal-Wallis test and the content analysis scores were compared by the t test. The JAMA scores of websites returned by Google and Bing were similar (median, 2; IQR [1,3]). However, the proportion of websites with a JAMA score ≥3 was significantly higher for Google than for Bing (41% versus 29,7%, p=0.03 per Chi Square). The analysis of the JAMA score according to the affiliation showed that the highest score of both platforms was for the journalism websites, while the websites of dental practices scored the lowest. Comparing the first 10 results of Google with the rest of the websites, there was no significant difference in the JAMA score. The same occurred in Bing. Only one website in Google presented the HONCode and none in Bing, thus it was inconclusive. Google’s content analysis showed a mean score of 34.3±18.4, while Bing’s content analysis showed a mean score of 39.1±18.5. There was no statistical difference between platforms (p=0.83 per t test for independent samples). Within the limitations of the present study, it can be concluded that the information concerning periodontal diseases in Portuguese displayed by Google and Bing presented low trustworthiness measured by JAMA score and the quality of the information was low, measured with the pilot instrument. | en |
