Análise e tradução comentada do conto "The searchlight" de Virginia Woolf

Abstract

Este trabalho de conclusão tem o objetivo de apresentar a tradução comentada do conto “The Searchlight”, da autora britânica Virginia Woolf. A renomada autora, em seu estilo peculiar, exige um esforço a mais de pesquisa, para que se possa fazer uma tradução plausível de sua narrativa. “The Searchlight” foi escrito em 1929 e reescrito diversas vezes pela escritora. A versão que apresento e que traduzi é aquela publicada postumamente em 1944. A seguir, abordo alguns aspectos da vida de Virginia Woolf e suas obras. Em sequência, apresenta-se uma explicação detalhada sobre o conto “The Searchlight”, colocando alguns parágrafos em destaque. Logo em seguida, apresenta-se a tradução do conto “The Searchlight”, mostrando as principais dificuldades que tive ao realizar o trabalho de tradução. Apresento a seguir os comentários sobre o conto, prosseguindo com suas peculiaridades. Este trabalho trouxe muitos questionamentos e reflexões sobre o fazer tradutório, bem como da necessidade reconhecer as limitações do tradutor e da tradução e que em muitos casos as soluções encontradas esbarram na dificuldade de encontrar na língua de chegada aquilo, no caso de Virginia Woolf, tão brilhantemente realizado na língua de partida.

This undergraduate thesis aims to present the annotated translation of the short story “The Searchlight”, by British author Virginia Woolf. The reputable author who, in her peculiar style, demands a wider research effort to make a comprehensible translation of her narrative. “The Searchlight” was written in 1929 and rewritten several times by the author. The version that I present, and I translated is the one published posthumously in 1944. Subsequently I cover some aspects of Virginia Woolf’s life and her books. Then, I present a detailed explanation of the short story “The Searchlight”, highlighting some paragraphs. Following that, I provide the translation of the short story “The Searchlight”, presenting the main difficulties when translating the short stoty. Hereafter, I present comments about the short story, proceeding with its peculiarities. This paper Finally, the main difficulties and reflections on the same matters are presented, followed by the comments, and pointing to the short story’s peculiarities. This work brought up many questions and reflections about the translation process, as well as the need to recognize the translator’s limitations and of the limitations of the translation process. In many cases, the solutions found run into the difficulty of finding in the target language that which, in Virginia Woolf’s case, was so brilliantly done in the source language.
