From the psychiatric reform movement, a new model of care was proposed, which provided for the social reintegration of the person with the mental disorder, as well as the active participation of the family in the care. Mental health care among support networks is recommended, which are levels of care in an increasing order of complexity, guaranteeing the integrality of the care and support to the family, articulating and integrating the points of attention of the health networks in the territory, including in the consultations. The family is of great importance in the process of rehabilitation and support to the patient with the mental disorder, being necessary an embracement space, of speech and listening to attend to the needs of care of the relatives of people with mental disorders. Some of the family inclusion strategies used in the Mental Health network, for instance, the psychiatric hospitalization units in HG, are the support groups; these groups are powerful spaces for listening, exchanges and supporting the needs of the families. The purpose of this study was to analyze the facilities and difficulties in the participation in a support group, found by relatives of people with mental disorders, and performed in a general hospital. The present study is a qualitative, exploratory-descriptive study, whose participants were ten family members of the support group of the Psychiatric Internment Unit (UIP) of a General Hospital of southern Brazil in the support group for in-patient relatives of this institution unit, this support group being a therapeutic space that takes place weekly in this unit from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., after visiting patients. The data from this study were extracted from the database of the larger project, which was collected in the period from March to June of 2016 through a semi-structured interview with open and closed questions, which were recorded and later transcribed in full. The questions were analyzed from the thematic analysis proposed by Minayo. The project was approved by the Research Ethics Committee. The results indicate facilities to participate in the support group: group time, reception of the team and participants, exchange of experiences, assistance in coping with the disease and treatment, and ease of hospitalization and proximity to health professionals. As difficulties, appear fear and shame of speaking in group, guilt, lack of time, vacations of the group coordinator. In the category of suggestions, they brought: more time options, greater disclosure of the group and the creation of a post-discharge group for relatives. Therefore, the great importance of the meetings for 8 family members is highlighted, emphasizing the importance of giving a voice to the family member and always maintaining the questioning of what can be improved to qualify even more the assistance given to the family members in the field of mental health, since, with the psychiatric reform, it is recommended the dehospitalization and the insertion of the family in the care. Thus, it is necessary to provide better care to this family so that the care provided by the family is effective and has quality.en
