As part of a program designed to verify the generalizeability of social psychologica/ findings directed by the third author, an experiment was planned to test an hypothesis raised by Wagman (1955) and later confirmed by him and by Centers, Shomer and Rodrigues(1970), according to which authoritarians are more suscetible than non-authoritarians to persuasive attempts that come from authoritative figures. A secondary goal of the study was to test the hypothesis that sources of high credibility lead to greater attitude change than those of low credibility, 54 adolescent students of a public school located in Rio de Janeiro, 27 of which with scores folling within the upper 20% and 27 within the lower 20% of the distribution of scores in a scale of authoritarism, were the experimental subjects. An attitude scale to assess attitude towards Discotheques was handed to the subjects before and afier the presentation of a persuasive communication against Discotheques, For half of the subjects in each group the author of the text against Discotheques was presented as being a highly credible and authoritative source, while for the other half he was described as a person of low credibility and authority on the subject. The results showed that, indeed, subjects high on authoritarianism change more their attitudes than the other three groups when the source of the persuasive communication is an authority figure, thus confirming the generality of the phenomenon. No significant main effect of source credibility per se was found. The importance of the venfication of Wagman 's hypothesis for the activity of the social technologist is highlighted.en
