A palynological study was performed for the first time in sedimentary profiles inside two tropical marsh forests in the extreme north of the Coastal Plain of Rio Grande do Sul to elucidate the dynamics of vegetation and climate during the last millennia. The forests are located in the municipality of Torres, with similar latitudes, one near the sea (Faxinal - 29o 21'S-49o 45'W) 2 km away from the coastline, and the other in a more inland region (Pirataba - 29o 15'S-49°51'W) 17 km away from the Faxinal. The Hiller Sampler was used to collect the profiles and samples for 14C dating (five datings per profile). To the pollen analysis, 47 samples were withdrawn from the Faxinal profile (612cm) and 24 samples from the Pirataba profile (254cm), each one measuring 8 cm3 , which were treated with HF, HCl, KOH, and acetolysis. Previously, Lycopodium clavatum tablets were added for calculating the pollen influx. The slides were mounted in glycerol-jelly. In a light microscope, a minimum number of 300 pollen grains and 100 L. clavatum spores were counted in each sample, with a parallel count of all the other palynomorphs. The sum of the two profiles identified 133 taxa (13 fungi, 9 algae, 3 bryophytes, 29 pteridophytes, 3 gymnosperms, 65 angiosperms and 11 other palynomorphs). The palynomorphs were identified and separated in environmental or taxonomic groups. For the diagrams, the Tilia and Tilia Graph software were used, and for the cluster analysis the CONISS software. In Pirataba, the analysis revealed a cold and dry climate between 24000-10000 years BP, with vegetation shortage, sparse fields and small clusters of trees occupying places with a little more humidity. Scarce elements of the Atlantic rain forest, found at this phase, allowed the assumption of a north-south tropical species migration by "Porta de Torres” in a possible previous milder phase of the last glacial stage. Between 10000 - 8000 years BP, Pirataba records showed a rise in temperature and humidity, with little development of the tropical forest in arboreal groups and a slight increase of the field. A decline in humidity, between 8000 - 6700 years BP, made the climate drier in Pirataba with slight retraction of the forest and the field, which was not evidenced in Faxinal (7000 - 6700 years BP) due to extensive marine transgression over the existing paleolagoon on that site. From 6700, a sharp humidity returned in Pirataba, with development of the local forest, which must have also occurred in other areas not affected by the transgression, and benefited from the eastwest migration of the Atlantic rain forest elements. A decrease of marine elements in Faxinal, between 6700 - 5500 years BP, was certainly a result from the regression of the sea. At the same time, the decrease of the herbaceous marsh, the forest and the grassland in Faxinal was certainly a result of soil salinity, while in Pirataba the forest continued its development The absence of marine elements in Faxinal, between 5500 - 3500 years BP, outlined conditions gradually more appropriate to new plant colonization, with progressive desalination of the soil. From 3500 years BP, the expansion of the vegetation on desalted soils occurred in Faxinal, that started to accumulate peat sediments. The development of Faxinal forest must have been influenced by the possible west-east migration of the Atlantic rain forest elements in this phase. A large and progressive development of the Faxinal and Pirataba forests was recorded from the last 1500 years, indicating more humidity flow and temperature rise, with little human influence. Thus, the results have shown that, due to marine transgression, the Faxinal forest is younger than Pirataba’s one, which should reflect a regional event, also detected by other authors in studies over the Coastal Plain at south of Torresen
