Spatial extrapolation in discharge regionalisation
Abstract in Portuguese (Brasil)

Discharge data usually exist only for medium and large catchments. Discharge regionalisation studies are based on these data, and therefore may present uncertainties for basins with a smaller or even larger drainage area than those used in regionalisation. In this study data from two distinct Brazilians regions were used: Ijuí River which is a tributary of the Uruguay River, in the southernmost region of Brazil, and Paraopeba River which is a tributary of the São Francisco River, in Central Brazil. Several medium-sized basins were used (600 and 10,000 km²) to establish regionalisation in the Ijuí Basin. Three basins with an area of 0.125, 1.0 and 19.5 km² were used to look at their extrapolation to smaller basins. For higher extrapolation, two stations were used with an area larger than 100,000 km2. For Paraopeba Basin, several medium-sized basins were used (600 and 10,000 km²) to establish regionalisation and the verification used three basins with an area of 6, 10 and 22 km² to look at their extrapolation to smaller basins. The regionalised variables were mean discharge over a long period, mean annual flow flood, flow duration curve and minimum discharge with a 7-day duration and a 10-year return period. The results show that there is a limited error in extrapolation to larger basins than those used in regionalisation, while for smaller basins the results proved acceptable up to 20 km². For minimums flows, the extrapolation biases tend to overestimate the desired flow. ...
