A abordagem atualmente adotada para o manejo de águas em meio urbano tem acarretado em prejuízos financeiros, ambientais, estéticos, à saúde e, sobretudo, à qualidade de vida da população. Em contrapartida, experiências recentes em outros países têm apresentado soluções mais aproximadas à sustentabilidade, por meio de planejamento e de tecnologias que reconhecem ecossistemas como mecanismos de controle e tratamento de águas pluviais de forma difusa e integrada às demais atividades urbanas. Este artigo apresenta a abordagem de desenvolvimento urbano de baixo impacto, pontuando suas diferenças em relação às práticas higienistas e compensatórias, por meio de revisão da literatura, além de traçar algumas perspectivas quanto à sua implantação. Com base na avaliação, acredita-se ser possível aplicar técnicas sustentáveis, embora com esforço considerável para capacitação e emprego em larga-escala. ...
