Síntese histórica do surgimento e ocupação do centro a oeste de Santa Maria, RS: a cidade, seus agentes dinamizadores e sua evolução

Abstract

A cidade é um ambiente produzido, que constitui um espaço com sua dinâmica em constante transformação e resultante da interação de fatores físicos, biológicos e antrópicos. As intervenções sobre as cidades e consequentemente de sua paisagem ocorrem concomitantemente com sua produção histórica, derivando também suas condicionantes geográficas. O objetivo desse estudo consiste em investigar a evolução do espaço urbano de Santa Maria/RS, com enfoque no trecho de sua região Centro a Oeste, e identificar agentes dinamizadores históricos relevantes no processo de produção e transformação desse espaço, a fim de também agrupar e centralizar tais informações. Tal investigação e resgate foi guiada por procedimentos de pesquisa bibliográfica, pesquisa documental, sistematização de dados e seleção de indicadores. Como resultado foi possível identificar os períodos e marcos geo-históricos para cidade, bem como reconhecer o contexto histórico e socioeconômico da produção do espaço urbano que impulsionou e agiu sobre essa, e determinar períodos e agentes representativos na sua evolução. Entre os principais motivadores da expansão foram identificados a viação férrea, as instituições militares e as instituições de ensino. A economia sustentada pelo militarismo, pelo serviço público em geral, e pelo setor terciário, sendo uma cidade alicerçada no comércio. Entende-se que esse compilado de informações geradas durante a pesquisa serve de subsídio para outros estudos, entendendo que a sua geo-história e as alterações em sua morfologia exercem influência sobre outras estruturas e dinâmicas da gestão pública e do planejamento urbano.

The city is a produced environment, which constitutes a space with its dynamics in constant transformation and resulting from the interaction of physical, biological and anthropic factors. Interventions on the cities and consequently their landscape occur concurrently with their historical production, deriving also their geographical determinants. The objective of this study is to investigate the evolution of the urban space of Santa Maria / RS, focusing on the stretch of its Center to the West, and to identify relevant historical dynamizers in the process of production and transformation of this space, in order to also group and centralize such information. Such research and rescue was guided by procedures of bibliographic research, documentary research, data systematization and selection of indicators. As a result, it was possible to identify the geo-historical periods and landmarks for the city, as well as to recognize the historical and socioeconomic context of the urban space production that stimulated and acted on it, and to determine representative periods and agents in its evolution. Among the main motivators of the expansion were identified the railway, military institutions and educational institutions. The economy sustained by militarism, by the public service in general, and by the tertiary sector, being a city based on commerce. It is understood that this compiled information generated during the research serves as a subsidy for other studies, understanding that its geo-history and changes in its morphology influence other structures and dynamics of public management and urban planning.
