Abstract
Mesoscale Convective Complexes (MCC) are often associated with severe weather events and consequently disasters. This study compares the second largest and the smallest MCC event that occur in Southern Brazil between 1998 and 2007 to analyze if there is a connection between the extension and the destructive potential of these MCCs. It was used information from the Durkee and Mote (2009) database, satellite imagery from GOES 12, synoptic charts, precipitation data from meteorological stations,an ...
It was used information from the Durkee and Mote (2009) database, satellite imagery from GOES 12, synoptic charts, precipitation data from meteorological stations, and articles from the local newspapers. The largest MCC analyzed (April 21st to 23rd, 2004) was 10.8 times larger lasted 3.48 times more (36.5 h), and caused higher volumes of precipitation in the affected municipalities, when compared to the smallest MCC (August 07to 8th, 2005) that lasted 10.5 h. Despite this, the consequences have been striking for the population in both cases, because natural hazards also depend on the vulnerabilities of the locations at the moment the events took place. ...
