Presença de SARS-CoV-2 no biofilme dental em pacientes sintomáticos positivos : achados preliminares

Abstract

Objetivos: A pandemia de COVID-19 causada vírus SARS-CoV-2 que causa a síndrome respiratória aguda grave está desafiando as autoridades de saúde em todo o mundo. Até à data, ainda não existe um tratamento farmacêutico eficaz e o vírus é altamente contagioso. O vírus pode colonizar muitos nichos do corpo humano, incluindo a boca. Considerando a diversidade da microbiota no biofilme dentário, incluindo vírus, é possível que (SARS-CoV-2 também possa colonizar este biofilme. O objetivo deste estudo foi investigar a presença de SARS-CoV-2 no biofilme dental de pacientes teste positivo em amostras de nasofaringe e orofaringe. Materiais & Métodos: Estudo clínico observacional em andamento no Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre. De 14 de julho a 7 de agosto de 2020, todos os funcionários do hospital com sintomas de gripe compareceram ao serviço de medicina ocupacional da instituição, foram convidados a participar. Amostras de biofilme dentário foram coletadas e analisadas por reação em cadeia da polimerase em tempo real (RT-qPCR). Resultados: De 164 indivíduos com sintomas gripais, 115 aceitaram participar (40 ± 9,62 anos; 67,82% mulheres ). Vinte e oito participantes testaram positivo para SARS-CoV-2 nos testes de naso e orofarínge (24,34%). Cinco participantes de 28 (17,9%) testaram positivo em amostras de biofilme dentário. Conclusões: SARS-CoV-2 está presente em biofilmes dentais e esta observação preliminar pode estimular novas investigações.

Objectives: The COVID-19 pandemic caused the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes severe acute respiratory syndrome is challenging health authorities all around the world. To date, there is still no pharmaceutical treatment effective and the virus is highly contagious. The virus can colonize many niches of the human body, including the mouth. Considering the diversity of the microbiota in dental biofilm, including viruses, it is possible that (SARS-CoV-2 also colonize this biofilm. The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of SARS-CoV-2 in the dental biofilm of patients testing positive in samples of nasopharynx and oropharynx. Materials & Methods: Observational clinical study in at the Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre. July 14th through July 7th August 2020, all hospital staff with flu symptoms attended the institution's occupational medicine service, were invited to participate. Dental biofilm samples were collected and analyzed by real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR). Results: Of 164 individuals with flu-like symptoms, 115 agreed to participate (40 ± 9.62 years; 67.82% women). Twenty-eight participants tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 in the naso and oropharyngeal tests (24.34%). Five participants from 28 (17.9%) tested positive on dental biofilm samples. Conclusions: SARS-CoV-2 is present in dental biofilms and this preliminary observation may stimulate further investigations.
