O apagamento variável da vibrante em coda silábica na comunidade de fala de Porto Alegre (RS) : da produção à percepção e avaliação linguística

Abstract

Este trabalho investiga o processo fonético-fonológico variável de apagamento da vibrante em posição de coda silábica no português falado em Porto Alegre (RS) (ca[r]ta ~ ca[Ø]ta, colhe[r] ~ colhe[Ø], qualque[r] coisa ~ qualque[Ø] coisa, dirigi[r] ~ dirigi[Ø]), a partir dos eixos de produção e de percepção e avaliação linguística. Para isso, as bases teóricas encontram-se na Teoria da Variação e Mudança (LABOV, 2008 [1972]) e em teorias mais específicas, como Lambert et al. (1960), Giles e Billings (2004), Preston (2003) e Eckert (2004, 2005, 2008), ocupadas com a análise dos processos de percepção, atitude e avaliação linguística. A revisão de estudos variacionistas anteriores sobre essa variável (CALLOU et al., 2002; MONARETTO, 2002; OUSHIRO e MENDES, 2015) sugere que o apagamento de /R/ em coda esteja em processo de crescimento em diferentes comunidades de fala brasileiras, inserido em um sistema de determinação dialetal e distribuição complementar. Definem-se duas etapas metodológicas para esta investigação, distintas e complementares entre si: a análise de regra variável e o teste-piloto online de percepção e avaliação linguística. Ambos os procedimentos se valem do corpus sociolinguístico LínguaPOA (UFRGS). A análise de regra variável se deu no software estatístico R, na interface RStudio, e considerou uma amostra de 16 entrevistas do LínguaPOA, realizadas entre 2016 e 2018. Os resultados para as seis variáveis linguísticas e quatro variáveis sociais controladas indicam que o apagamento da variável na comunidade de fala de Porto Alegre possui encaixamento quase puramente linguístico e encontra-se em processo de crescimento, cujo estágio de mudança varia conforme o contexto linguístico. O apagamento de /R/ em coda silábica correlaciona-se às variáveis Renda, Posição na Palavra, Contexto Fonológico Precedente, Classe Gramatical e Tonicidade, sendo que os fatores outras palavras, verbo e sílaba tônica favorecem o apagamento, renda C1, sílaba medial e vogal posterior desfavorecem o processo. Em relação ao teste-piloto de percepção e avaliação linguística, foi adotada a técnica dos estímulos pareados (LAMBERT et al., 1960) para serem captadas as percepções individuais dos falantes-ouvintes porto-alegrenses por meio da seleção de cinco descritores. Os resultados confirmam a hipótese de que falares com e sem apagamento da vibrante pós-vocálica são percebidos e avaliados de forma distinta, o que sugere que a variável faça parte de um sistema de significação social. Seguiu-se, então, uma análise estilística, buscando mapear o campo indexical dos significados sociais da variável (ECKERT, 2004, 2008) às variantes. Esta mostrou que o apagamento de /R/ em coda indexa significados sociais relacionados a personae menos bonitas e menos jovens.

This work investigates the phonetic-phonological variable process of deletion of the vibrant in coda position in the Portuguese language spoken in Porto Alegre (RS) (ca[r]ta ~ ca[Ø]ta, colhe[r] ~ colhe[Ø], qualque[r] coisa ~ qualque[Ø] coisa, dirigi[r] ~ dirigi[Ø]), considering both the production and the linguistic perception and evaluation axes. In this regard, the theoretical bases are set on the Theory of Variation and Change (LABOV, 2008 [1972]) and on more specific theories, such as Lambert et al. (1960), Giles and Billings (2004), Preston (2003), and Eckert (2004, 2005, 2008), which are focused on the analysis of the processes of linguistic perception, attitude and evaluation. The review of previous variationist studies on this variable (CALLOU et al., 2002; MONARETTO, 2002; OUSHIRO and MENDES, 2015) suggests that the deletion of /R/ in coda is in progress in different Brazilian speech communities, embedded in a system of dialectal determination and complementary distribution. Two methodological steps are defined for this investigation, distinct and complementary among each other: the variable rule analysis and the online pilot-test of linguistic perception and evaluation. Both procedures draw upon the sociolinguistic corpus LínguaPOA (UFRGS). The variable rule analysis took place in the statistical software R, in the RStudio interface, and considered a sample of 16 interviews from LínguaPOA, carried out from 2016 to 2018. The results for the six linguistic variables and the four social variables indicate that the deletion of the variable in the speech community of Porto Alegre has almost purely linguistic embedding and is in progress, whose change stage varies according to the linguistic context. The deletion of /R/ in coda is correlated to the variables Income, Position in the Word, Preceding Phonological Context, Word Class, and Tonicity, and the factors other words, verb and tonic syllable favor the deletion, while income C1, medial syllable and back vowel disfavor the process. As for the pilot-test of linguistic perception and evaluation, it was used the matched-guise technique (LAMBERT et al., 1960), in order for the individual perceptions of the speaker-listener people from Porto Alegre to be grasped by the selection of five descriptors. The results confirm the hypothesis that the application and non-application of the deletion of the postvocalic vibrant are perceived and evaluated in a distinct way, and this suggests that the variable belongs to a system of social meaning. A stylistic analysis mapping the indexical field of social meanings of the variable (ECKERT, 2004, 2008) to the variants showed that the deletion of /R/ in coda indexes social meanings related to less beautiful and less young personae.
