This paper consists of a brief revision of some important theories on peasantry. At first we criticize the concept of “family agriculture” which we consider superficial and without complements in order to translate the complex reality of agriculture. Ideas formulated by Chaianov and Teodor Shanin are presented, as well as contemporary contributions by Jalcione Almeida, Marcel Mazoyer and Laurence Roudart.
