| pt_BR |
dc.description.abstract | This doctoral thesis aims to analyze the vision that the American filmmaker Woody Allen built of New York, his hometown, making it both a symbol of his work and a character in his films, until he finds himself facing the impact of September 11, 2001 attacks. Through the concept of "historian filmmaker", coined by Robert A. Rosenstone, we analyzed his artistic attitude throughout this process. The path taken by this thesis starts from a first chapter in which the following points are sought: the general context of the artist's training in the city and his relationship with other contemporary filmmakers, also highlighting his distancing from New York at the beginning of his career and his return to it in his mature phase. Next, the second chapter deals with the evolution of New York's representations in Woody Allen's cinema, highlighting what I call New York's Tetralogy, that is, a series of feature films that form a coherent set where the city is used as scenario to deal with certain conceptions of narrative, views on history and perspectives of memory. The third chapter presents the artist's confrontation with the episode of September 11, 2001. This catastrophic event put his worldview to the test, demonstrating the extent to which he is willing to maintain it, especially when a comparison is made between what he produced after 9/11 with the work of other filmmakers and also with the immediate socio-political reality. Finally, the fourth chapter shows how Woody Allen opted for silence regarding 9/11, following a trend that has always followed him, even in the most extreme episodes of his private life, preferring to create works that advocate overcoming tragic historical facts. Thus, he resumes both thematic and narrative coherence that has guided his production since the first films, and which is also sustained and justified by his Jewish background. | en |
