Investimento direto estrangeiro na América do Sul : a relação do ambiente institucional e a qualidade do investimento

Abstract

Buscando evitar a análise dos determinantes de investimento direto estrangeiro pelo estudo empírico, este trabalho sugere uma relação teórica tentativa a ser aplicada para investigar a relevância do ambiente institucional para esta modalidade de investimento na América do Sul. Verificamos a relação positiva entre o ambiente institucional e a qualidade do investimento direto estrangeiro. A abordagem setorial indica que as instituições são mais importantes para o investimento direto estrangeiro nos setores secundários e terciários, e mais ainda se estes estiverem ligados a alta tecnologia. Enquanto a perspectiva de modo de entrada aponta que mesmo que o investimento greenfield possa levar a externalidades positivas maiores, é para o investimento por fusões e aquisições que as instituições são mais importantes.

Seeking to avoid the analysis of the determinants of foreign direct investment by employing econometric models, this paper suggests an exploratory theoretical framework to be applied on the investigating about the relevance of the institutional infrastructure for this type of investment in South America. We verified the positive relationship between institutional environment and the quality of foreign direct investment. The sectorial approach indicates that institutions are more important for foreign direct investment in secondary and tertiary sectors, and even more if they are connected to high-technology. While the prospect of entry modes points that even if greenfield investment can lead to better positive externalities is for investment through mergers and acquisitions that institutions are more important.
