Throughout their development cycle, startups need financial resources to make their growth projects viable. However, entrepreneurs find it difficult to obtain these resources through traditional banks, since startups have a high level of uncertainty and generally do not have tangible assets that can be used as collateral for financing operations. To fill this gap, venture capital investors come in many forms: angel investors, accelerators, corporate venturing, crowdfunding platforms and investment funds. In general, these financial contributions are made more than once during the development cycle of startups. That being said, this study aims to analyze how the previous existence of different sources of investment can influence the fund managers' decision to invest in startups. To accomplish that, an exploratory study with a qualitative approach was chosen. The study was conducted initially through a bibliographic and documentary analysis carried out with the objective of characterizing the brazilian ecosystem of investors in startups. Subsequently, a multiple case study was conducted, with the analysis of four venture capital investment funds and nine startups that negotiated capital with those funds. Data collection took place between July and October 2019. Through this study, it was possible to identify impact factors related to co-investment that affect the assessment of fund managers in Brazil. The two main positive aspects identified were the effects of quality signaling and the active participation of investors in attracting new rounds of investment. The main negative aspects, on the other hand, were the existence of an excessive dilution of the founders and the excess of rights of the investors who made the first investments. In addition, it was possible to identify that each type of investor has its own characteristics that somehow impact the evaluation of investment funds. In this sense, the previous investment of accelerators and angel investors seems to positively impact the analysis of the funds, while the presence of corporate investors and crowdfunding platforms tends to harm new rounds of fundraising by startups with investment funds.en
