A escrita como fenômeno semiológico em Émile Benveniste

Abstract

Esta tese versa sobre a problemática da escrita oriunda da reflexão de Benveniste presente nas Últimas aulas. Nesse sentido, é o Benveniste das Últimas Aulas, em relação com o dos Problemas de linguística Geral, que acompanha este trabalho na busca por uma proposição de um gesto interpretativo para o problema da escrita a partir da visada semiológica do linguista. Assim, considerando o objeto de pesquisa – a escrita em sua relação com a reflexão sobre a semiologia da língua de Benveniste –, o objetivo geral deste estudo consiste em verificar como o fenômeno da escrita se configura e se desdobra na reflexão semiológica de Émile Benveniste a partir da relação de interpretância da língua com ela mesma. Atrelados a esse objetivo geral, constituem-se duas questões imbricadas uma na outra: 1) Como a escrita se configura a partir da reflexão semiológica de Benveniste? e 2) Se a escrita se revela a partir da relação da língua com ela mesma, o que se produz como escrita dessa relação? Assim, de modo a responder a essas questões, empreende-se um estudo teórico de discussão e análise de diferentes textos dos dois volumes de seus Problemas de Linguística Geral, com especial atenção sobre o artigo “Semiologia da língua”, trazendo em contraponto à leitura de seus manuscritos organizados geneticamente por Fenoglio e Coquet na publicação Últimas aulas. O trabalho se apresenta em três capítulos, ao longo dos quais defendeu-se que a escrita, à luz da semiologia da língua, constitui-se a partir do retorno sobre a língua, considerando suas próprias unidades e mecanismos de organização e funcionamento. Nessa relação da língua com ela mesma, possibilitada pela interdependência língua-fala, encontra-se a propriedade metalinguística em que a língua reproduz unidades significantes a partir de sua dupla significância. As unidades e mecanismos da língua, na sua dupla significância (semiótico e semântico), reaparecem em outro modo de a língua se apresentar – a escrita. É por essa razão que se afirma que a escrita revela-se como a imagem da língua.

This thesis deals with the problematic of writing from Benveniste’s reflection present in Last Lectures. In this sense, it’s the Benveniste from Last Lectures, in relation to that of General linguistic problems, who accompanies this work in the search for a proposition of an interpretative gesture for the problem of writing from the linguistic semiological point of view. Thus, considering the research object - writing in relation to the reflection on Benveniste's language semiology -, the general objective of this study is to verify how the phenomenon of writing configures and unfolds in Émile Benveniste's semiological reflection from the language's interpretive relationship with itself. Linked to this general objective, two questions are formed, related to each other: 1) How is writing configured from Benveniste's semiological reflection? and 2) If writing reveals itself from the relation of language to itself, what is produced as writing of this relationship? Thus, in order to answer these questions, we undertake a theoretical study of discussion and analysis of different texts of the two volumes of General linguistic problems, with special attention to the article “Semiology of language”, bringing in counterpoint to reading of his manuscripts genetically organized by Fenoglio and Coquet in the publication Last Lectures. The work is presented in three chapters, during which it was argued that writing, in the light of language’s semiology, is constituted from the return on language, considering its own units and mechanisms of organization and functioning. In this relation of language with itself, made possible by the interdependence of language-speech, is the metalinguistic property in which language reproduces significant units from its double meaning. The units and mechanisms of language, in their double meaning (semiotic and semantic), reappear in another way of presenting the language - writing. This is why it is claimed that writing reveals itself as the image of language.
