Vegetable oils represent an interesting renewable source for the production of useful chernicals and new materiais. Nevertheless, their reactivity needs to be enhanced by the introduction of additional functionalities into the fatty acid molecules. Therefore a variety of chemical and biochernical reactions have been used for their conversion to value-added products. Among those reactions, the epoxidation plays an important role. Usually the processes that have been used to prepare epoxidized vegetable oils involve peroxycarboxylic acids, specially the peroxyacetic acid because of its easy availability, Iow price and reasonable stability at ordinary temperature. Nevertheless, this process is time consuming, presents a low selectivity, has hazards associated with handling peroxyacids in industrial scale and also involves effluent problems. In the present work, the epoxidation of the soybean oi! was investigated using three different systems: the catalytic biphasic methyltrioxorhenium(MTO)-CH2Ch/H20z system, the catalytic VO(acac)z/terc-butylhydroperoxide system and the stoichiometric trichloroacetonitrile(TCAN)-CH2C}z/H20 2 system. Reactions were carried out under different conditions (temperature, time, and reactant proportions). The epoxidized soybean oils were characterized by standard titration analyses (iodine value, oxyrane oxygen, and acid value), by spectroscopic techniques (IR, 1H and 13C NMR) and by viscosimetry. The best results (conversion, epoxidation degree, and selectivity) were obtained with the methyltrioxorhenium system. The stability of the epoxidized soybean oil kept under different conditions was followed during 29 days. The best condition tumed out to be keeping the oil in the dark and at low temperature. ...
