A condição de sobrepeso ou obesidade aumentou em todo o mundo, em todas as idades, condição esta que é um dos principais fatores de risco para doenças crônicas. O objetivo deste trabalho é realizar uma revisão na literatura para identificar e descrever recomendações gerais na prescrição de treinamento para pessoas com sobrepeso ou obesidade. Foi realizado um trabalho de revisão descritiva através de um levantamento bibliográfico de publicações utilizando bases de dados eletrônicos: Google Acadêmico, Scielo, PubMed, ResearchGate. A busca pelos estudos foi realizada no período de dezembro 2018 a maio 2019. Foram selecionados 23 artigos que tiveram métodos populares de intervenção: treinamento resistido (TR), treinamento aeróbico (AE), treinamento aeróbico combinado com resistido (AE+R) e treinamento intervalado de alta intensidade (HIIT). O treinamento ideal para pessoas com excesso de peso parece ser o treinamento aeróbico, método mais favorável para redução de peso corporal, combinado com o treinamento resistido que contempla diferentes manifestações da força para manutenção/preservação da massa magra.
