Uma perspectiva crítica sobre a tradução de trocadilhos em uma série de comédia : uma análise da legenda de The Office (U.S.)

Abstract

Esse estudo busca ressaltar a importância de um tradutor qualificado na tradução de trocadilhos, especialmente quando esse fenômeno linguístico precisa fazer parte de uma legenda. Para realizar essa tarefa, foram selecionados para análise trocadilhos nas legendas brasileiras do seriado americano The Office (U.S.), já que em uma série de comédia os trocadilhos com intenções humorísticas são usados frequentemente como piadas. Tal investigação foi baseada em princípios teóricos como de Delabastita (1996), um dos maiores estudiosos sobre trocadilhos, e Farwell and Helmreich (2006), que possuem um sistema para qualificar tais traduções. Após análise dos trocadilhos, aqueles que foram julgados insatisfatórios na língua de chegada tiveram uma retradução sugerida pelo autor desse trabalho. A área da legendagem vem crescendo muito nos últimos anos com a popularização de séries estrangeiras e serviços de streaming, e espero que esse estudo possa mostrar como é importante qualificar o tradutor para que o espectador que faz uso de legendas em seriados de comédia possa aproveitar o programa tanto quanto alguém que o assiste na língua de partida.

This study aims to highlight the importance of a qualified translator in the translation of puns, especially when this linguistic phenomenon happens in a subtitle. To accomplish this task, several puns were selected from the TV show The Office (U.S.) to be analyzed, considering that puns with humorous intentions are frequently used as jokes in comedy series/sitcoms. This investigation was based on important academic papers such as Delabastita (1996), one of the most renowned authors in the field, and Farwell and Helmreich (2006), who have created a system to qualify different types of translations. After examining the translation of the puns, those who have been labeled as inadequate were retranslated by the author of this paper. The subtitling field has been growing rapidly the past few years with the popularization of foreign series and streaming services, and I hope this study will be able to demonstrate how important it is to qualify the translator, so that the viewer who watches comedy series with subtitles may enjoy the show as much as someone who watches it in the source language.
