The advent of the group of polymers classified as plastic and the exponential increase in their use observed from the second half of the twentieth century onwards brought several benefits to the general populace. As it is lightweight, durable and inexpensive, it has enabled vehicle efficiency gains, mass-market electronics, innovative uses in the healthcare industry and helped increase the shelf life of foods. However, some features that made these polymers appealing also make them a major environmental problem. The resistance and high durability of plastics make the waste dumped in the environment, particularly in the oceans, accumulate and threaten marine fauna, which confuses waste by food and is contaminated or injured. Aggravating this phenomenon, the plastic packaging sector, items with extremely short lifespan, today represents 36% of the total production of polymers, due its low cost and insulation capacities of plastics. There are also concerns about the effects on human health of plastic consumption and the excessive use of oil and natural gas, non-renewable sources, for their production. Given this scenario, this paper presents a series of future scenarios, extending up to 2050, of plastic production and the accumulated generation of its waste. These projections aim to help in coming up with a framework of strategies to deal with this issue, given the high volume of production that we already have. Even in a scenario of strong restrictions on consumption, millions of tons of plastic will still be dumped in the oceans in the coming decades. Therefore, it is concluded that an array of measures is needed to limit the damage caused by plastics, including consumption reduction, increased recycling rates, technological innovation and remedial measures. ...
