The theme of this work is the Brazilian publishing market, focusing on the relation between demand and domestic production of books. Through an analysis of the influence of economic and cultural aspects on domestic supply and demand, it is intended to help explaining the weight that different factors have on the dynamics of the Brazilian market. Among the themes treated in this work are topics such as illiteracy, schooling and the value of reading. Economic factors include manufacturing costs, book prices, macroeconomic conditions, and sectoral policies. This research was developed in a historical perspective, with the purpose of analyzing the influence that different factors had on the formation of the demand for books by the Brazilian population and on the configuration of the domestic supply. The first three chapters tell this story. The fourth and last chapter brings a picture of the current situation and makes room for some conclusions. In general, it is concluded that, in Brazil, there is not a strong tradition of valuing reading, whose habit is restricted to a minority. The prices practiced in the country also exclude a large part of the population from the consumption of books. On the other hand, recent history shows that Brazil does not fit into the same crisis scenario of the publishing markets of developed countries, mainly affected by the digital revolution. Stability and economic growth, along with the continuity of policies on education and culture promotion, can expand the domestic consumption of books, since this is a market that has not yet matured. ...
