Imprensa negra do Rio Grande do Sul : uma análise da primeira fase do jornal O Exemplo (1892-1897)

Abstract

O presente trabalho pretende analisar o jornal O Exemplo, pioneiro da imprensa negra no Rio Grande do Sul, durante a sua primeira fase de circulação, que compreende o final do século XIX, de 1892 a 1897. O objetivo principal do estudo foi identificar quais e como eram abordadas as questões étnico-raciais na primeira página dos exemplares durante o período mencionado. Os objetivos específicos são: explorar as temáticas mais presentes nas capas das edições organizadas para a pesquisa, identificar o contexto histórico e social de surgimento e circulação do jornal O Exemplo, entender como a folha abordava a presença do negro naquele contexto e compreender a linha editorial do jornal. A metodologia utilizada foi a Análise de Conteúdo de Laurence Bardin (2010). O corpus é constituído por 52 edições correspondentes a primeira fase de circulação d’O Exemplo, entre 1892 e 1897. A análise quantitativa contemplou as categorias dos conteúdos que, posteriormente, foram analisados qualitativamente. Percebeu-se que as questões étnico-raciais estiveram presentes nas edições, os textos forneceram indícios da vida do negro na Porto Alegre do século XIX - vivendo incontavéis situações de discriminação racial. Através das páginas d’O Exemplo os negros eram protagonistas, estavam no meio social e tinham representatividade.

The present paper intends to analyze the newspaper The Example during its first phase of circulation, which comprises the end of the nineteenth century, from 1892 to 1897. The main objective of the study was to identify what and how ethnic-racial issues were addressed on the front page during the period mentioned. The specific objectives are: to explore the themes present in the covers of the editions organized for the research, to identify the historical and social context of the appearance and circulation of the newspaper The Example, to understand how the leaf addressed the presence of the black in that context and to understand the editorial line of the newspaper. The methodology used was the Content Analysis of Laurence Bardin (2010). The corpus consists of 52 editions corresponding to the first phase of circulation of The Example, between 1892 and 1897. The quantitative analysis contemplated the categories of contents that were later analyzed qualitatively. It was noticed that ethnic-racial issues were present in the editions, the texts provided evidence of the life of the Negro in Porto Alegre of the nineteenth century - living incontestable situations of racial discrimination. Through the pages of The Example the blacks were protagonists, they were in the social environment and had representativity.
