Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate how cigarette smoking can be predicted by Attention Déficit-Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and personality factors combined. Participants were 188 undergraduate students, smokers and non-smokers, 17-48 years-old, in Porto Alegre (Brazil). They answered the Adult Self Report Scale (ASRS), Bateria Fatorial de Personalidade (BFP) and Alcohol, Smoking and Substance Involvement Screening Test (ASSIST) in their classrooms. About 30% of them were smokers and 16,9% presented symptoms of ADHD in ASRS. We found high levels of consumption of other drugs in this sample. A regression analysis showed that cigarrete smoking was predicted by use of alcohol, hypnotics/ sedatives, ecstase and cannabis. ADHD subtypes were associated to personality factors, Neuroticism, Openness to new experiences and Extroversion. The combined effect of personality and ADHD was not relevant to determine the cigarette smoking. However, indications were that related the severity of the cigarrette consumption with characteristics of personality. ...
