A leitura foi reconhecida enquanto campo de investigação nas primeiras décadas do século XX. As teorias da leitura e do leitor dividem-se em várias tendências, procurando mapear o território. A leitura foi reconhecida enquanto campo de investigação nas primeiras décadas do século XX. As teorias da leitura e do leitor dividem-se em várias tendências, procurando mapear o território. Contudo, apresentam lacunas, porque entendem o leitor como uma unidade homogênea, sem levar em conta situações sociais e condições étnicas e de gênero. A essa homogeneidade, contrapõem-se as produções artísticas contemporâneas, cuja centrifugação determinou a fragmentação e, consequentemente, a insuficiência do conceito tradicional de literatura. “Discurso” apresenta-se como noção substitu-tiva, mas igualmente insatisfatória. Refletir dialeticamente sobre a leitura e o leitor talvez proporcione saídas para o im-passe decorrente das mudanças históricas, sociais e tecnológicas. ...

Reading was recognized as a field of research in the first decades of the 20th. century. The theories of reading and the reader are divided in several ways, all trying to map the territory. However, they show lacks because they understand the reader as a homogeneous unit, without taking into account social situations and ethnic or gender conditions. However, they show lacks because they understand the reader as a homogeneous unit, without taking into account social situations and ethnic or gender conditions. This homo-geneity contrasts with the contemporary artistic productions, whose centrifugation has determined the fragmentation and consequently insufficiency of the traditional concept of literature. "Discourse" emerges as a substitute, but equally unsat-isfactory, notion. Reflecting dialectically on reading and the reader may provide solutions to the difficulty due to histori-cal, social and technological changes. ...
