The application of optimization algorithms is historically employed on the structural field with the intention of reducing total mass, allowing the execution of a lower cost project and appropriate design, ensuring the required resistance is met on the most stressed region. With the advance of manufacturing techniques, the opportunity to implement the topological optimization emerged, whose designing freedom allows obtaining a structural optimum with substantial mass reduction, without compromising the stiffness. Recently, this optimization has been expanded beyond the classical methodology of stiffness maximization submitted to static forces. With the purpose of applying the optimization on structures submitted to dynamic loads such as those in the aerospace and vehicle industries, the present work has the objective to implement an algorithm for the maximization of the natural frequency with a final volume constraint. The optimization is carried out on the Matlab software corresponding to the BESO method (Bi-directional Evolutionary Structural Optimization). A study is performed to compare the results obtained using the soft-kill method with those available in the literature. The possibility of further development of the algorithm is discussed with the implementation of static analysis. By setting a maximum stress as a constraint it is viable to ensure that the structure will endure the applied static loads while the natural frequency is maximized. An example of this application is demonstrated. ...
