Cuidado parental normalmente envolve ganhos na sobrevivência da prole em detrimento de dispêndios energéticos e reprodutivos ao cuidador. Cuidado parental normalmente envolve ganhos na sobrevivência da prole em detrimento de dispêndios energéticos e reprodutivos ao cuidador. O transporte de ovos junto ao animal consiste em um cuidado parental também custoso, inclusive podendo comprometer a locomoção, o que pode interferir na habilidade de forrageio do animal. O presente estudo explorou os custos na capacidade de capturar uma presa gerados por investimento reprodutivo em fêmeas de Paratrechalea ornata (Araneae, Trechaleidae), que transporta a ooteca aderida junto às suas fiandeiras após oviposição. A hipótese desse trabalho prevê que investimentos em cuidado maternal levam à custos diretamente proporcionais na habilidade de forrageamento das fêmeas. Observou-se um padrão onde a chance de capturar uma presa por fêmeas de P. ornata diminui proporcionalmente com o investimento reprodutivo da fêmea, antes mesmo da postura dos ovos. Os resultados demonstram haver custos ao genitor ao exercer cuidado parental e, de acordo com a hipótese neste caso, sugerem possibilidades específicas no contexto da espécie, que apresenta a oferta de presentes nupciais por parte dos machos. ...
