Sabe-se que, mesmo em pequenas concentrações, a presença nas águas de abastecimento de substâncias como a prednisolona, um fármaco largamente empregado no tratamento de doenças alérgicas, entre muitas outras, pode ocasionar sérios danos à saúde humana e animal. Uma tecnologia alternativa para o tratamento de águas contaminadas com fármacos é a fotocatálise heterogênea, um processo avançado de oxidação (POA). Assim, o objetivo deste trabalho foi investigar a degradação fotocatalítica da prednisolona na presença de três catalisadores diferentes: TiO2 e ZnO, sob radiação UV, BiOI na região do visível e também fotólise na região UV e visível. Observou-se que após 30 minutos de reação a prednisolona pode ser totalmente degradada quando se emprega os catalisadores TiO2 e ZnO sob radiação UV e também somente na radiação UV. O catalisador de bismuto, sob radiação visível, não foi capaz de degradar a prednisolona. Além disto, não há diferença de comportamento quando se compara os resultados obtidos nas reações de degradação da fotocatálise com TiO2 e fotólise no UV, ou seja, o catalisador TiO2 não influenciou na degradação do fármaco. A degradação da prednisolona segue uma cinética de pseudoprimeira ordem e, ao comparar as constantes aparentes de velocidade de cada técnica, a fotocatálise com o catalisador ZnO é o que apresenta a maior atividade fotocatalítica. Quando se usa o ZnO, o pH final da reação se mantém próximo do valor neutro. Já a fotólise no UV produziu uma solução final alcalina e a fotocatálise com TiO2 uma solução levemente ácida. Foi realizado um ensaio toxicológico com Lactuca sativa e os subprodutos formados após 5 horas de reação, para as três técnicas de degradação testadas, não apresentaram efeito tóxico. ...
