Objetivo: Investigar os conhecimentos que os professores de Escolas de Educação Infantil têm sobre linguagem e consciência fonológica. Métodos: A amostra foi constituída de 18 professores; foi aplicado questionário no próprio local de trabalho, com 6 perguntas objetivas e abertas, que tratavam sobre sua formação, tempo de atuação como professor, conhecimentos acerca da linguagem, da consciência fonológica e de atividades desenvolvidas em sala de aula. Resultados: Os resultados foram descritos em relação ao numero total de professoras. Constatou-se que a maioria delas confundem os termos: linguagem, língua, fala e voz, e não tem claro o seu significado; 77,7% conhecem o significado de consciência fonológica; observou-se que a atividade de linguagem mais realizada em sala de aula é o estímulo a escrita do nome dos alunos, 88,8% dos professores afirmam já ter trabalhado com suas turmas, mas somente 55,5% trabalhou o nome dos alunos relacionando com os sons das letras, 66,6% trabalhou rimas e 72,2% trabalhou brincadeiras com os sons relacionando com nomes de objetos. Não houve muitas diferenças entre as respostas dos professores com mais ou menos tempo de experiência, nem em relação à formação de nível médio ou superior. Conclusão: A partir dos dados obtidos neste estudo, conclui-se que, o conhecimento sobre linguagem e consciência fonológica dos professores de escolas de educação infantil que participaram do estudo é superficial e poucas são as atividades realizadas por eles com suas turmas para o estimulo do desenvolvimento da linguagem das crianças. PURPOSE: Investigate the knowledge that teachers of Schools from Early Childhood Education have about language and phonological awareness. METHODS: The sample consisted of 18 teachers, a questionnaire was applied in the workplace, with 6 objective open questions, dealing on their formation, time working as a teacher, knowledge about language, phonological awareness and activities developed in the classroom. RESULTS: The results were described in relation to the total number of teachers. Where it was found that most people confuse the terms: language, idiom, speech and voice, and there is no clear meaning; 77.7% know the meaning of phonological awareness; observed that the language activity most frequently performed in the classroom is to stimulate the writing of the name of the students, where 88.8% of teachers said they had already worked with their classes, but only 55.5% of students worked name relating to the sounds of the letters, 66.6% worked rhyming and 72.2% worked jokes with the sounds relating to the names of objects. There were no significant differences among the teachers responses with more or less time experience or training in relation to the high school or college degree. CONCLUSION: From the data obtained in this study, it is concluded that the knowledge about language and phonological awareness of teachers of elementary schools participating in the study is shallow and there are few activities for them with their classes for the stimulation of language development of children.
