Rio Grande do Sul is the main state of pear production in Brazil and in the orchards planted in the last years, quinces are most commonly used as rootstocks, aiming to control vigor. However, the researches which are base for recommendations of combinations cultivar/rootstock for different producing regions are still scarce. The aim of this work was to evaluate the vegetative growth, the grafting compatibility and the production of pear trees grafted on quinces, in two sites of Rio Grande do Sul. In the conditions of Eldorado do Sul, place with low cumulative cold during the winter, the pear trees ‘Seleção 9.93’, ‘Smith’, ‘Teen’ and ‘Triunfo’ grafted on ‘Adam’s’, ‘EMA’ e ‘EMC’ were evaluated to the third year. In Vacaria, place with high cumulative cold during the winter, the pear trees ‘Abate Fetel’ and ‘Rocha’ grafted on ‘Adam’s’, ‘Ba29’ e ‘EMC’ were evaluated to the ninth year. At both sites, vegetative growth and grafting compatibility were evaluated. In Vacaria, yield and fruit size were also evaluated. In Eldorado do Sul, ‘Smith’ showed higher vegetative growth and good graft compatibility with quince rootstocks. ‘Seleção 9.93’, ‘Teen’ and ‘Triunfo’ showed weak growth and symptoms of grafting incompatibility. Among the rootstocks, ‘Adams’ induced higher growth than ‘EMA’ and ‘EMC’, regardless of the top cultivar. In Vacaria, ‘Rocha’ showed higher vegetative growth, while ‘Abate Fetel’ showed strong symptoms of located incompatibility. Pear trees grafted on ‘Ba29’, mainly ‘Rocha’, showed lower levels of carbohydrates below the grafting spot. ‘Rocha’ initiated production on the third year and the yield fluctuated between years due to the variations of flowering and fruit set. ‘Abate Fetel’ showed insignificant production. For both experimental conditions, the photosynthesis was reduced and did not differ between cultivars or between rootstocks. The results denote that in Eldorado do Sul the combination ‘Smith’/‘Adam’s’ shows adequate vegetative growth. In Vacaria, although ‘Rocha’ present alternate bearing, it is promising for cultivation, especially when grafted on ‘Adam’s, which induces higher initial growth and higher flowering intensity.en
