This study aims to evaluate the contribution of private biowaste collection and composting enterprises to minimize environmental impacts related to urban solid waste systems in Porto Alegre. A small sized enterprise operating in this city, named Re-Ciclo, was selected as a model for the generation of Integrated Waste Management scenarios. Several models for managing solid waste were evaluated by the LCA technique, through three complementary studies. Initially, a comparison was made between the potential environmental impacts of the composting process and the impacts of solid waste disposal in a landfill, per ton of solid waste managed. Then, an evaluation of the environmental relevance of small composting enterprises in the context of municipal solid waste management was carried out. Finally, three scenarios were studied, all of which considering that composting services are offered to 100% of the municipal households. The results show that the model used by Re-Ciclo generates less potential environmental impacts than the model used by DMLU, when considering the impacts per ton of solid waste managed. The reduction of potential environmental impact indicators ranged from 12,5% for the eutrophication potential to 94,8% for the global warming potential. In contrast, the reductions within the context of municipal solid waste management were less significant. Environmental benefits may be perceived when private composting services are offered to, at least, 5% of the households. These scenarios require a manifoldness of small enterprises collecting and composting household biowaste, which may compromise their viability. In scenarios that consider a total adhesion of the municipality to composting processes, the domicile composting model was the most effective among the systems studied. ...
