Thanks to the development of new technologies, patients’ vital functions can be maintained for a longer period of time, making the final stage of their lives last longer. Palliative care is a new approach in the process of patient care and its goal is to humanize the end of life. Many patients, even if they are at the end of life, still have wishes that may or may not be realized. Health care professionals’ emphasis on the biological and quantitative aspects may prevail over the patients’ biographical aspects, which are qualitative. This new look, in terms of professional approach and assessment results, allows a connection among the patients’ biological and biographical perspectives. This dissertation aims to analyze the biographical aspects of patients admitted into Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre’s Palliative Care Unit, especially their last wishes, and how they relate to the perspective of finitude, based on the complex bioethics model. Patients, family members and health care professionals were observed over a period of immersion that lasted one year. The data collected was later qualitatively analyzed. ...
