Abstract in Portuguese (Brasil)

Introduction: Dematiaceous fungi are the causal agents of phaeohyphomycosis, a terminology that includes superficial, subcutaneous and opportunistic fungal infections, such as in immunocompromised individuals in a hospital environment. Objective: To study the presence of phaeohyphomycosis agents in the airborne of the Emergency, Operating room, Maternity, Mental Health and a hospitalization room. Materials and Method: Twenty-eight samples were collected using the passive sampling method (on Sabouraud Dextrose with Chloramphenicol agar) during the morning for 30 - 60 min, a height greater than one meter from the floor and distant from the walls. Results: Five different genera were identified. Among the fungi identified, Alternaria alternata (28.57%) is more prevalent, followed by Curvularia lunata (24%), Exophiala jeanselmei (4.76%), Aspergillus sp. (4.76%), Trichophyton sp. (4.76%) and non-sporulating fungi (33.33%). The first floor of the Hospital is the place of greatest fungal contamination. Conclusion: According to the study, it was possible to observe the prevalence of fungi causing phaeohyphomycosis as anemophilous in a hospital environment. This is the first report of the prevalence of opportunistic dematiaceous fungi in the hospital airborne in Brazil. Vigilance and regular cleaning, along with visitor restraint, may be among the measures necessary to reduce the airborne fungi burden. ...
