Notes pour une caractérisation de la conjoncture culturelle de la belle époque

Abstract

O presente artigo busca trazer elementos para uma caracterização da chamada “Belle Époque” como um período atravessado por contradições, por forças e tendências antagônicas: histórica e politicamente como uma época de paz percorrida por tensões e embates; literariamente, a Belle Époque nasce durante o conflito entre o naturalismo e o simbolismo; quase imediatamente a seguir, ambos são vítimas de movimentos antinaturalistas e antisimbolistas, respectivamente; enfim, a conjuntura cultural dos últimos anos do século XIX e os primeiros quinze anos do século XX é marcada pela presença de forças que pugnam pelo “retorno à ordem” (em suma, por um novo classicismo), opondo-se àqueles que buscam “du nouveau” – quer eles se chamem Alfred Jarry, cubismo, futurismo ou Apollinaire.

This paper aims to offer elements for a caracterization of the “Belle Époque”, analyzing it as a period fertile in contradictions, antagonic forces and tendencies: historically and politically, it was a period without wars in Europe, but full of tensions and struggles; on the literary level, the Belle Époque was born during the conflict between Naturalism and Symbolism; almost imediately afterwards, both movements were the victims of antinaturalist and antisymbolist movements; moreover, the end of the XIXth century and the beginning of the XXth century saw the simultaneous presence on the cultural scene of writers, artists and poets who seeked “du nouveau” (with Alfred Jarry, the cubists, the futurists or Apollinaire foremost among them), and, opposing them, of forces who struggled for a “retour à l’ordre” (in other words, for some kind of a new Classicism).
