| pt_BR |
dc.description.abstract | The novel of Machado de Assis, Memórias Póstumas de Brás Cubas, is build in the dimension of book as a material object, establishing as a theme the procedures of writing, the format of edition, possible readers and di# erent types of reading. Starting from that, Brás Cubas (as the narrator) takes works of tradition e constructs metaphors from the image of the book. In order to interpret these indications of how Brazilian elite created its relation to the book, the reading and the literary tradition, its recovered the accumulated critic (from José Veríssimo to Abel Barros Batista, having as a main reference Roberto Schwarz). It is taken into consideration the strong opposition in the literary critic between a universalized reading, concerned with inserting Machado in the western canon (Menippean satire, Sterne, Dante, Shakespeare, Goethe...) and the one that assumes the dialogue with local tradition e the bond with brazilian history. It interests, than, to dimension the meaning of the novel from the place of the book in the Second Empire, in which slavery and illiteracy imposed tough limits to the formation of a brazilian public opinion. | en |
