Escrita e memória indígena nas reduções guaranis : século XVIII

Abstract

Os “modos de rememorar” dos Guaranis, outrora relacionados a músicas, festas e beberagens, sofreu grande impacto com o advento da escrita nas reduções. A instrução alfabética ministrada aos indígenas permitiu-lhes formular registros escritos de acontecimentos e mesmo de suas opiniões. A escrita, pode-se afirmar, introduzira novas maneiras de eles se relacionarem com o passado, a partir de uma sociabilidade calcada na memória estabelecida através do mundo dos papéis. E a familiaridade manifesta com os diferentes níveis das práticas letradas, mesmo restrita a uma elite, havia promovido sociabilidades inéditas, permitindo aos índios das reduções estabelecerem novos modos de relação com os outros e os poderes.

The guaranis’ “ways of remembrance”, once related to songs, festivities and brews, suffered a great impact with the advent of writing in the reductions. The alphabetic instruction given to the natives allowed them to create written accounts of certain events as well as of their opinions. Writing, one can say, introduced new ways of relating to the past, from the standpoint of a sociability grounded on the established memory of the world of papers. And the familiarity with the different levels of literate practices, even when restricted to an elite, promoted novel ways of socialization, allowing the natives of the reductions to establish new ways to relate with each other and the powers.
