O fim dos Objetivos de Desenvolvimento do Milênio, no ano de 2015, e lançamento dos Objetivos Sustentáveis do Milênio ressaltam a importância da discussão sobre o papel das organizações internacionais no estabelecimento de metas específicas para o desenvolvimento do bem-estar social das populações. A crescente noção de que a saúde é um fator fundamental para o desenvolvimento socioeconômico dos países se mostrou na ampla presença da área nas metas e nos indicadores dos ODM, implementados pela OMS e seus braços regionais. Ao longo dos seus quinze anos de vigência, buscou-se identificar quais seriam os maiores desafios para a melhoria na qualidade da saúde e quais as políticas que deveriam ser adotadas para que se atingisse o fim almejado. O objetivo deste trabalho é identificar a abrangência de atuação da OMS e da OPAS no contexto da formulação e implementação dos ODM, além de promover uma análise mais detalhada do progresso desencadeado na América Latina na área da saúde. Para isso, o trabalho apresenta a história das organizações de saúde e evolução dos conceitos e prioridades nessa área, assim como o contexto em que foram desenvolvidos os ODM e a evolução dos seus indicadores na América Latina. ...
