Non-uniform heat application in welded structures produce transient temperature distributions, producing non-uniform thermal stresses, which in turn generate plastic deformations, residual stresses and permanent deformations (distortions). The distortions are undesirable geometric deviations in the structure, causing great losses. In thick plates, buttwelded (V-groove), the main problem is angular distortions, especially when the structure is welded without restriction and with multiple passes. One of the most efficient ways to control angular distortion is to predict its value before welding. The main objective of this research was to develop analytical methods and models for the prediction of the angular distortion in butt joints (V-groove) in multipass welding. To achieve this goal, two approaches have been applied. The first was based on experimental evidence and the second on an analytical equation available in the literature. The relationship between the angular distortion and the thermo-mechanical behavior of the material in the welded joint was also investigated. In the experiments, test specimens were made of ASTM A36 structural steel plates, welded by the process electric arc welding with gas protection and consumable electrode (hereinafter referred to as "MAG"), in the thicknesses of 9.75 ; 12.75; 16.0 and 19.0 mm. The experiments were grouped into nine groups, classified according to the dimensions of the specimens, welding parameters (voltage and current), travel speed, heat input and number of passes. For groups 1-6, the distortions were measured along the passes through LVDT - Linear Variable Differential Transformer - and, in all groups, the final distortion was measured through a goniometer To investigate the relationship between angular distortion and thermomechanical behavior of the material, type K and type S thermocouples were used to obtain the thermal cycles. In relation to the approach based on experimental evidences, the methods and models were obtained in two phases. The first phase was based on the angular distortion behavior along the passes, in which the results of the experiments of groups 1-4 (thicknesses 16.0 and 19.0 mm) were used and it was verified that, independently of the heat input used in each group, the angular distortion in any one pass had the same value. This finding led to the choice of an analytical model (model B), from which a methodology was defined involving experimental analysis in which it is possible to extrapolate the prediction of angular distortion. The second phase of the experimental approach resulted from the analysis of the results obtained from groups 1-6 (thicknesses 9.75, 12.75, 16.0 and 19.0 mm). From the observation that the angular distortion had the same linear behavior as a function of the heat input for the four thicknesses and, in addition, using the results obtained in the first phase, methodologies were developed with the purpose of obtaining analytical models for prediction of angular distortion (models D, E, F and G). These models allow to predict the angular distortion as a function of the energy and of the plate thickness or alternatively, through cross-sectional area of the groove, in the intervals of heat input [0.35; 2.5] kJ/mm and of thickness [9.75; 19.0] mm. The preliminary comparative of models with experimental results showed that they can be used to predict angular distortion, as well as new models can be obtained from the methodology developed. In relation to the approach based on the analytical equation for bead-on-plate welds, the developed methodology allowed to adapt the equation to predict the angular distortion in a V-groove butt weld. The method was tested in several welding conditions, where a good agreement was observed between the experimental and analytical results for the final value. The studies involving the thermomechanical analysis of the material in the welded region showed that the observed the angular distortion behavior along the passes, using different heat input, can be explained by the differences in temperature between the surface of the fusion (fusing puddle) and the lower surface of the plate at the root of the weld. In addition, the study showed that angular distortion behavior is significantly influenced by the phenomena that act on the resistance to deformation of the structure, that is, mechanical strength of the material and section resistant as weld passes are performed.en
