The increasing production and use of electronic equipment, mainly computers, associated with the culture of planned obsolescence generates a large amount of electronic waste. Computers are made of different materials, such as polymers, ceramic and several metals: aluminium, copper, gold and rare earth, being the last one present particularly in Hard Disk Drives (HDs). Despite the abundance of some of these metals, the mining and extraction processes are very expensive from an economic and environmental perspective. Thus, this work intends to analyse the difficulties founded in waste of electronic equipment management in Brazil, perform a characterization of the hard disks and estimates the economic and environmental advantages of recycling this material. For this, HDD were collected, disassembled and weighted, the components were characterized by XRF and EDS. Basically, there are two types of frames in HDD, a group made of austenitic stainless steel alloy and another made of aluminium alloy. Nickel is present in disks and actuator arm. The permanent magnets are made of approximately 40 percent of neodymium and iron, praseodymium was found in some samples. Based on the data characterization, the losses were calculated and it is estimated that Brazil could receive more than US$ 7 million gross annually in HDs recycling and raw material export rather than scrap export. ...
