Abstract in Portuguese (Brasil)

A large part of the population has some dentofacial deformity, in varying degrees of severity, and it can interfere negatively in fundamental human functions such as breathing, speech and swallowing, as well the emotional and aesthetic aspects involved in these alterations. Correction of these discrepancies demands a great planning between the professionals involved, oral and maxillofacial surgeon and orthodontist, from the pre-surgical orthodontics with the decompensation of the dental movements, through the surgical phase and later by the postoperative orthodontic part. The treatment does not end as soon as these three stages end, as it is necessary to follow the patient longer to evaluate the long-term results and to see if the treatment was successfully planned or if there were recurrences of movement. This literature review focuses on the surgical phase, more specifically at the moment of fixation and stabilization of the bone segments after the osteotomies that should guarantee the long-term stability of the procedure. ...
