Abstract in Portuguese (Brasil)
Em Dom Casmurro, Machado ironiza os pendores românticos e trágicopatéticos da cultura brasileira. In a comical modulation, Machado de-constructs Flaubert’s narrative, which will be confronted, in this article, with Nietzsche’s, Kafka’s and Musil’s de-constructions. What is most Brazilian in Machado’s version, is the burlesque and anti-tragic attitude towards tragic (shakespearean) motifs. Refocussing traditional readings of this novel, this article will show the “Evil” in the configuration of shyness and compulsive ambivalence of mind and body - a modern version of the medieval acedia motif. Indulgence and systematized ressentment are presented as a specifically Brazilian form of melancholy. ...
