The present article discusses the theoretical and methodological aspects of the sociolinguistic approach of plurilingualism as a political, historic and social phenomenon, and it also analyses how the socio-political formation of Brazilian Portuguese happened, by emphasizing the situation of plurilingualism in Brazil since the sixteenth century until the period known as New State.
