This study aims at understanding the formative trajectory of students of the Technical Course in Musical Instrument, of Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Ceará - Fortaleza Campus. The following issues were developed from the proposed problem: what paths do students take to the course? What do they seek there and what do they find there? And, finally, what leads from this formative experience? Situated on the theme of professional education in music (MORATO, 2009), starting from a qualitative approach (BRESLER, 2000; MELUCCI, 2005; STAKE, 2011) and supported in the Sociology of Music Education (SOUZA, 2004; 2008), as well as in the Sociology of Daily Life (PAIS, 2003; 2005), this study involved a case study (BOGDAN; BIKLEN, 1994; YIN, 2005; GIL, 2009), in which the formative trajectories of eight students of this course were investigated. The main concepts and theories articulated in the elucidation of research questions are the notions of musical profession (TRAVASSOS, 1999, 2005, SEGNINI, 2007, 2008, LUDOVICO, 2007, COLI, 2006); Vocation (ADENOT, 2010); Trajectory (PAIS, 2005); Theory of human action (Schutz, 1979); Socialization (BOURDIEU, 2005; LAHIRE, 2008; SETTON, 2008, 2010); (ELIAS, 1994; LAHIRE, 2001; MARTUCCELLI apud SETTON, 2013); Field and habitus (BOURDIEU, 1996; 2004; 2005); Social space; Strategies and tactics of action (CERTEAU, 1994). Among the main research findings, it was verified that, despite having a history of involvement with diverse musical practices, most of the students investigated found their first experience of oriented learning in the course. Thus, the musical socializations lived in the everyday world play a decisive role in the musical training and in the consequent professional projects of these subjects. Among the significant movements observed are those who seem to subvert a sequential hierarchy of naturalized social positions within training systems. As for the analysis of the individual trajectories, it was verified that each student departs from a different point, having different causes, reasons and expectations. Therefore, to take a course, in the format of a Technical Course in Musical Instrument, is related to the flow of the construction of being a musician for each one of the investigated agents. This would be a project with seemingly less commitment, especially when compared to a degree in music. However, it was observed that this is a motivating factor for the acquisition of considerable symbolic capital - materialized in the diploma and symbolized in the field of musical reading and writing, taught by a group of professionals recognized and certified for this, within an institution also recognized and Valued socially as a training environment. It is hoped that the present research may contribute to a better understanding of the professional training processes in the field of music, especially in the medium-level technical-professional courses.en
