O cenário do mercado mundial está cada vez mais competitivo, é importante avaliar o desempenho das soluções propostas para o mercado, tanto em termos de processos quanto de resultados. Isso deve ocorrer de forma a possibilitar a identificação de elementos que justifiquem o sucesso ou insucesso de um determinado produto e/ou serviço. Assim, o estabelecimento de mecanismos que possibilitem a compreensão de fatores que justifiquem uma dada colocação no ambiente dos negócios torna-se essencial para a sobrevivência. Esses elementos são trabalhados em um processo denominado benchmarking, que é uma ferramenta que permite efetuar comparações de procedimentos e práticas entre empresas, ou de seu ambiente interno, com o objetivo de efetuar melhorias e alavancar vantagem competitiva. O benchmarking é considerado uma investigação relativa ao desempenho de processos ou produtos, comparando-os com aqueles identificados como boas práticas. Esse capítulo detalha as principais definições sobre o tema. Além disso, busca discorrer sobre os tipos de benchmarking e suas diferentes gerações.
