The present paper aims to study the translation of expletives on the Brazilian Portuguese subtitles of the first season of the television series Veep. The series was chosen due to its construction of humor, which is built up through the dialogues. The paper begins by approaching translation as a field of study, mainly based on the studies of Hurtado Albir (2001); considerations regarding the consumption of television series in Brazil and aspects of Brazilian subtitling are also presented. Following that, English and Portuguese definitions for expletive attributive are given, as well as how it is represented in the subtitles. The concept of taboo language is then elaborated, focusing on specific usages and their meanings, grounded mainly by Steven Pinker (2008) and Ruth Wajnryb (2004). Both English and Brazilian Portuguese subtitles for the corpus analysis were extracted from Veep’s official DVD. The research is presented with excerpts from the subtitles, in order to identify and discuss the representation of the expletives seen in the original dialogues. Finally, the significant amount of euphemisms and omissions found during the research are analyzed, as well as their causes and consequences. ...
