Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is the second most cultivated cereal in the world, but factors such as biotic nature of diseases can affect the production of grains. This work aimed to select endophytic, indigenous bacteria of rice plants, with potential for biocontrol of brown spot, caused by Bipolaris oryzae, and promotion of growth of rice plants. A collection of 303 bacterial isolates were obtained and submitted the abovementioned investigations. For studies to promote growth, we measured the length of the main root and shoot growth of seedlings in vitro and, plant height, leaf number, weight of fresh and dry weight of roots and shoots, in greenhouse conditions. We also evaluated the vigor and seed germination. In the study of biocontrol, we investigated the in vitro antagonistic potential of the isolates against the pathogen, and the ability of bacterial isolates in reducing the severity of brown spot, under greenhouse conditions. The results showed that 11.5% of the isolates were promising to root length and 2.3% had the high development of shoots in vitro test. In the greenhouse, nine isolates (49, 52, 160, 193, 267, 274, 277, 282 and 294) stood out as potential growth promoters. With respect to Standard Germination Test (SGT), the treatments with GreenForce, PBS and isolates 193, 274 and 160 affected the vigor of seedlings, however, the treatments with PBS and isolate 160 also affected the seed germination. Furthermore, 25 endophytic isolates were effective in inhibiting mycelial growth of the pathogen, with inhibition zones of up to 3.5 cm. Under greenhouse conditions, 39 isolates differed from the control, reducing the severity of the disease, on average 89.75%. In short, the studies showed that the isolates of endophytic bacteria tested were promising for the growth of rice plants and have good potential for biocontrol of brown spot.en
