In this paper, we discuss the impact of the information structure of sentences in the organization of discourse. In particular, we investigate the informational import of the constrastive topic construction under the prism of two formal theories of discourse: Segmented Discourse Representation Theory (SDRT; ASHER; LASCARIDES, 2003) and Questions Under Discussion (QUD; ROBERTS, 1996; BÜRING, 2003). For the former theory, the discourse relations that compose discourse – such as “parallel”, “contrast”, etc. – are primitives subject to different contextual conditions; for the latter, on the other hand, discourse structure is a subproduct of the informational component present in sentences, that triggers a set of “implicit questions” that ultimately yield discourse structure. Our conclusion is that the theoretical framework offered by the QUD approach is more adequate than the SDRT one to account for the use of constrastive topic constructions in connected discourses – in spite of the fact that the QUD approach also needs some modifications. More specifically, we show that the advantage of the QUD theory over SDRT lies precisely in the intrinsic connection that such theory estabilishes between information structure and discourse structure.en
