A liberdade em John Stuart Mill

Abstract

O presente estudo foi elaborado com base em levantamento bibliográfico, com o objetivo de demonstrar a relevância dos conceitos desenvolvidos por John Stuart Mill para o debate sobre as concepções liberais de sociedade aberta. O estudo iniciou pelo exame da concepção de ser humano e prosseguiu com a análise dos principais desenvolvimentos da teoria sobre a liberdade, para finalizar com as considerações sobre a justiça. O suporte principal da pesquisa foram as obras Sobre a Liberdade, Utilitarismo, Sistema de Lógica, Considerações Sobre o Governo Representativo e A Sujeição das Mulheres. A partir da análise da concepção de ser humano de John Stuart Mill se pretende demonstrar que o padrão único da felicidade utilitarista exige considerações mais amplas para tornar sua moralidade possível, e que seus fins estão associados à doutrina da liberdade. Com a análise da liberdade social se pretende provar que a declaração de John Stuart Mill a favor da liberdade individual trouxe elementos fundamentais para as propostas atuais de vida em sociedade, como a questão acerca do reconhecimento, através da liberdade de consciência e da interação social. No capítulo relativo à análise da liberdade política se pretende provar que o indivíduo é o ponto de conformação do projeto político de John Stuart Mill, com a análise da origem e desenvolvimento das instituições, sobre o debate político e o antagonismo na democracia. Ao final, na análise da concepção de justiça, se pretende demonstrar que a concepção de justiça de John Stuart Mill se vincula à teoria utilitarista através de uma justificação de natureza política, na qual a liberdade está relacionada com a promoção do bem-estar social e o aperfeiçoamento constante das instituições.

This study was based on bibliographic research, in order to demonstrate the relevance of the concepts developed by John Stuart Mill to the debate on the liberal conceptions of open society. The study began by examining the concept of human being and continued with the analysis of the main developments of the theory of freedom, to finish with considerations of justice. The main support of the research were the works On Liberty, Utilitarianism, A System of Logic, Considerations on Representative Government and The Subjection of Women. From the analysis of the conception of human being in John Stuart Mill is intended to demonstrate that the single standard that utilitarian happiness requires broader considerations to make this morality possible, and that its aims are associated with the doctrine of freedom. With the analysis of social freedom is intended to prove that the statement of John Stuart Mill in favor of individual freedom brought fundamentals to the current proposals of life in society, as the question about the recognition, through the freedom of conscience and social interaction. In the chapter on the analysis of political freedom is intended to prove that the individual is the point forming the political project of John Stuart Mill, with the analysis of the origin and development of the institutions, of the political debate and antagonism in democracy. Finally, the analysis of the conception of justice, it is intended to demonstrate that the conception of John Stuart Mill justice is linked to the utilitarian theory through a political justification, in which freedom is related to the promotion of social welfare and the constant improvement of the institutions.
