Este trabalho descreve um dimorfismo sexual na coloração de Heliconius ethilla narcaea, um caso intermediário de diferença entre machos e fêmeas em um gênero classicamente conhecido por formar anéis miméticos baseados em coloração aposemática e que apresenta poucos casos descritos de diferenças entre os sexos. Caracterizamos este dimorfismo qualitativa e quantitativamente através de análises de imagens das asas e testamos experimentalmente a importância desta variação para o reconhecimento de parceiros pelos machos. Também foi testado se há dimorfismo no comprimento de onda das três cores que compõem o padrão das asas em questão através de espectrofotometria. Os machos são capazes de discernir entre os sexos utilizando-se apenas do padrão de coloração dimórfico e esta diferença se limita à disposição das manchas e quantidade de diferentes pigmentos. As cores não diferiram no seu padrão de comprimento de onda. Estes resultados somam à já conhecida função de reconhecimento específico para a coloração de Heliconius também seu uso no reconhecimento sexual de parceiros. ...
