This is a study about the variables that act over brake system performance, friction and wear. In accordance with literature, these variables are: the sliding velocity, contact pressure, temperature and air humidity. The manner that these variables act in the performance of the brake systems is related to mechanisms of friction and wear involved in the process of braking. Therefore, there are an inter-relation among variables, mechanisms and performance. Having chosen a set of disc brake systems that is representative of the market, it was made a survey of the common range of sliding velocity, contact pressure and temperature that these systems are submitted to. The sliding velocity and the contact pressure were obtained analytically, while the temperature was measured in experimental tests to make possible the comparison of the brake systems. In relation to the sliding velocity there were no significant differences observed. However, in the analyses of the contact pressure it was observed that the pneumatic systems operate with pressures considerably higher, like three times higher than the hydraulic systems. The thermal behavior of the systems was assessed by carrying out an experimental test in which the same sliding velocity, contact pressure and energy density (energy for unit area) were kept. The temperature results demonstrated that in the systems with ventilated discs there were significant differences of temperatures between the faces of the hub and opposite to the hub due to bad distribution of pressure in the pads. The non-uniform pressure distribution in the pads is mentioned by some authors in the literature as mainly due to the stiffness of the systems as well as clearances. Finally, it was decided to determine the thermal characteristics of the systems through the average temperature measured by the thermocouples in the ventilated discs and the temperature measured by one single thermocouple in the solid disc, as it is specified by the standards. The results indicate the systems present a behavior that is similar to each other.en
